Diabetic Retinopathy (DRP) is an eye disease brought on by the elevated sugar levels in the blood of patients with diabetes causing changes in the blood vessels of the retina. DRP is one of several Diabetic Eye Diseases (DEDs). Diabetic Retinopathy can manifest itself in different ways. One way is that abnormal blood vessels begin to sprout on the surface of the retina. The second manifestation is these new, weak blood vessels beginning to swell or leak fluid. DRP can be associated with Diabetic Macular Edema. Diabetic Retinopathy has four stages ranging from mild to severe nonproliferative retinopathy, and finally, proliferative retinopathy.
